It was great to see that our news papers published a few of the photographs from this event too.

I was also working hard this past month of some more Night Photography creations,

capturing the MilkyWay above Bridport,

The chaple in the woods near Abbotsbury,

The old coastguard cottage on the coast road between Bridport and Weymouth,

and also combining my portrait photography skills with my night photography skills to produce some amazing portraits capturing the Milkyway as a back drop.

I was also contracted to undertake some Product photographs, my favourite of which where photographs of products that will go pn sale for this Christmas!

I seem to have found my Christmas spirit early this year.

I also had time to fit in some private photography tuition too with my clients ;earning new skills and going home very happy with the images they photographed.

All in all this October has been very busy for me , but very enjoyable too. Night portrait photography

Portrait Photography in September

Written by Steven Powell. Posted in Bridport Photography, Photography

As  September has ended and October is upon us I thought I would keep you all up to date with the Portrait  Photography work I have produced this past September.

It started with an amazing Pregnancy Photography session with the beautiful mum to be Rowan, and her ever so nice husband and proud dad to be Mike. This portrait session was extremely enjoyable to photograph as the two subjects were great in front of the lens, which gave me the chance to capture some wonderful and very creative photographs. Showing rowan in all her womanly glory, Celebrating her magical time, and the beauty of pregnancy. I was then commissioned to photograph the very happy couple of Dan and Kay on the day of their anniversary celebrating the day of their first date. This portrait session was photographed on east beach in west bay, as this was the location of Dan and kay’s  first date. We timed the session so we could capture the sun setting behind the lovely couple creating some amazing reflections in the sea as it gently lapped against the shore line. This made the couple shine like movie stars. I also had some studio work with the delightful Aida and the beautiful Emily whom was in various costumes that she had created. This made for an interesting portrait session that was joy to photograph.

Bridport Carnival and torchlight parade 2013

This was yet another well attended weekend of events here in Bridport, It started with lots of local events running up to the main weekend Carnival including the Bridport Carnival Princess competition, This was followed by The Junior Bridport’s Got Talent royalty selection night.

There was also Bridport carnival bingo, carnival golf, carnival darts, and a few other events to get the town into the spirit of Bridport carnival.

Although the weather was not great, the good people of bridport along with lots of visiting tourists all came out in force to support the carnival procession as it made its way through bridport town.

As I have said the weather was not good , but this made a great contrast and a good backdrop for all the colourful and very creative procession floats and walking entries in the Bridport carnival, there were a few personal favourites to me that made very good subjects for my photography, they include a excellent float by Bridport Round Table, that was made in tribute to 617 Squadron royal air force, the dam busters, marking 70 years since their daring raid during world war 2.

There was also two gremlins walking in the parade , a selection of over sized bugs and a awesome spider ( although I don’t like spiders ). Bridport Groves Nurseries entry was very musical with their employees singing and dancing all the way through the procession, even Elvis made an appearance!

Father Christmas was in attendance along with a few of his helpers, I think they were on their holiday. We had the pleasure of a dinosaur from our Jurassic coastline sharing waves and cheers on the very colourful float supplied by freshwater holiday park, Also we were all kept safe by the wessex FM super heroes. there where many walking entries that made beautiful subjects for portrait photography and lots of amazing batten twirling majorettes.

The torchlight procession on the sunday evening gave us all a chance to be part of the carnival with the opportunity to parade through Bridport town, onwards to Westbay ending up at Eastcliff, holding a burning torch.

This was a very beautiful sight to behold with over 2000 people all holding a torch all being led by bridport towns lady majoress finishing with a massive fire on the beach in westbay and final a spectacular fireworks display to mark the end of a great weekend.

I look forward to next years Bridport Carnival

Weymouth Photography.

A donkey portrait photographed on Weymouth Beach while she was taking a break from the mid-day sun, photography by Bridport photographer Steven Powell

It was a wonderful day in Weymouth, the sun was shining, the light was perfect for photography.

My day of photography started on the fabulous Weymouth beach which is a gently curving arc, very wide and gently sloping, with golden sand and shallow waters normally with gentle waves that lap on the shoreline.

There are some amazing attractions of a traditional English seaside resort, including donkey rides, Punch and Judy, trampolines and a small fun fair all which took my mind back to when I was a child.

All the amazing attractions all made great subjects for my photography.

Donkey rides on Weymouth beach have been an important attraction for many years although there was a break in the attraction when The Downton family who run the rides for generations retired from Weymouth Beach in 2000.

Mrs Maggie Aldridge re-introduced Donkey Rides on Weymouth Beach in May 2005 much to the residents and tourists of Weymouth pleasure and delight.

Maggie’s Donkeys have also won Best Donkey Group in the Southern Region and came runner up in the Best Group in the Country.

The donkeys where very well behaved and made great models for my photography too.

I then had a slow walk to the wonderful Weymouth quayside where you can see the hustle and bustle of the many working fishing boats landing their catch of the day, the sights sounds and smells of this working quay are truly wonderful.

Again I had many opportunities to take various photographs in many styles from landscapes, to creative art photography, wildlife photography and a few portraits too.

In particular interest to me was the most important vessel in the harbour, the ‘Ernest and Mabel’ who is a SEVERN class Lifeboat that has saved many lives along with its extremely brave crew.
Weymouth is one of the busiest Lifeboat stations on the coast, undertaking around 100 ‘shouts’ a year.

All in all my day of photography in Weymouth was a wonderful day full of amazing light , colour and wonderful subjects for my photography.
